What are Daily Spend Limits?
Daily Spend Limits act as an essential security control for your account—similar to a daily card spending limit on a bank account. By setting a cap on your daily API expenditure per currency and float pot, you protect your account against unauthorized usage or drained floats in the event your API credentials are ever compromised.
- Opt-In Feature: If you don't configure a limit, your account and transactions will continue to operate as standard.
- API Transactions Only: Spend limits currently apply strictly to API purchases. Bulk Buy orders are not included.
- Automatic Midnight Resets: Limits reset automatically every day at 00:00 UTC without requiring any manual action.
How to Set or Update a Spend Limit
To configure your limits, make sure you are logged into the standard Buyer Hub using an account with Buyer Admin permissions (users with Buyer User permissions can view limits but cannot edit them).
- Log into the Buyer Hub.
- Navigate to Security Centre → Spend Limits.
- You will see a list of all your active float pots categorized by currency.
- Enter your preferred maximum daily limit in the input field next to the relevant pot, then click Save.
- A prompt will ask you to verify the change using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
- Once verified, your limit is active immediately.
Note: MFA verification is required once per session. If you have already authenticated during your current session, you won't be prompted again for subsequent limit updates.
Monitoring Your Spend & Alerts
What happens when a limit is reached?
Once your cumulative API spend for the day reaches 100% of your configured limit:
- Further API purchase requests for that currency/pot will be temporarily blocked for the remainder of the day.
- Your system will receive a
403_LIMIT_EXCEEDEDerror response. - An automated email notification will be sent to notify your team immediately.
- Your limit will automatically reset at 00:00 UTC, restoring normal API purchasing capabilities.
Advance Warning Alerts
To prevent unexpected interruptions to your service, designated email recipients will receive proactive warning alerts when daily spending hits key milestones:
- 85% Threshold: Warning email sent.
- 95% Threshold: Critical warning email sent.
- 100% Threshold: Limit reached notification sent.
Viewing Spend in the Hub
You can monitor your real-time daily spend at any time in the Buyer Hub under Security Centre → Spend Limits. This view details your set limit, current day's cumulative spend, and currency type.
Additionally, your daily spend limits are displayed as an expanded field within the MOA Balances and Credit Balances views in your Hub dashboard.
Troubleshooting & Common Scenarios
My API transactions are being blocked
Cause: You may have reached your daily spend cap for that specific currency float.
Solution: Log into the Buyer Hub and head to Security Centre → Spend Limits. Check your current daily spend against your limit. If you need to process more transactions today, a Buyer Admin can instantly raise or toggle off the limit, or you can wait for the automatic reset at 00:00 UTC.
Transactions are failing, but I don't recall setting a limit
Cause: Another team member with Buyer Admin rights on your account may have configured or adjusted the limit.
Solution: Check with your internal account administrators or review the configuration under Security Centre → Spend Limits. If you suspect unauthorized access, please update your passwords and contact Tillo Support immediately.
I didn't receive warning or limit emails
Solution: Check your email spam/junk folders. Ensure your account users have the correct notification preferences turned on in their settings, and verify that your registered admin email addresses are up to date in the Hub.
International Payments (IP) transactions are being blocked
Cause: IP transactions are governed by the spend limit configured on your base currency pot.
Solution: You do not need to set individual spend limits on sub-currency floats. Verify that your base currency pot has not exceeded its configured daily limit.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Q: Can I set different spend limits for different currencies?
- Yes. Spend limits are set per currency and per float pot. For example, you can maintain a USD limit of $10,000 and a GBP limit of £5,000 independently.
- Q: What happens to in-flight transactions when a limit is hit?
- Only the transaction that causes you to exceed your limit (and subsequent requests) will fail. Any purchases previously authorized before reaching the cap remain valid and will not be reversed.
- Q: Can I temporarily disable a limit without deleting it?
- Yes. Spend limits feature an Active/Enabled toggle. You can turn a limit off to process high-volume transactions and toggle it back on whenever you like.
- Q: How does a spend limit error differ from an insufficient float error?
- An insufficient float error means your pot does not have enough monetary balance to cover a purchase. A daily spend limit error means you have reached your chosen daily cap, regardless of how much remaining balance is in your pot.
- Q: Can Tillo Support modify or remove my limit for me?
- For security and governance reasons, spend limits can only be set, updated, or removed directly by your account's designated Buyer Admins within the Buyer Hub.
